Choosing a username seems easy. But it actually has a huge impact on your followers, because you have to make sure everyone remembers your username.

Here are some tips for choosing a good Instagram username.

a. Keep it short and clear

Your username is one that will appear on your followers’ feeds, Not your name. So make sure you use a username that clearly represents your identity.

You can use your full name, nickname or business name.

Make it as short as possible, yet still still clear, to refer to your identity or your business For example, username @bankmandiri better than @pt_bank_mandiri_persero_tbk

b. Easy to remember and easy to type.

When people interac with you, reply to comments, mentions, tags, send messages, and more, the first thing they have to do is type your username.

Try avoid some of these things because other than hard to type, also make your account look less professional and less trusted.

  • Using emoticon / emoji in your username, @?
  • Too many numbers, for example @cutecatzz882939813
  • Using underscore/symbol in the beginning, eg @ _ayutingtong
  • Use too much symbols and underscores e.g.: @Cute_. _ LovelyCats=(>.<)=
  • Being tacky and looking unprofessional, like @4quw_c4y4nk_k4muwh.

Dot and underscore symbols can be used as a separation between words to make it more pronounced, For example: @raditya_dika

C. Add keywords (if necessary)

Username can be searched by keyword through Instagram's search.

You can use keywords in your username to have your account appear in the search results.

Alternatively, you can also combine your brand name with keywords that are relevant to your business.

For example, you have a hijab brand name idea named Vanilla. You can add “hijab” in your username, or even make it as a part of your brand’s name, so you can be easier to find.
